Today we begin to see some of the details within Sam’s setting of Karthun, the first adventure of the campaign, and we meet Brett and Charlie’s new characters!
Brett is playing a dwarf thief, Jeda Swiftbeard (which isn’t a huge stretch based on his history with rogues like Dagger McStab III).
Charlie rolls into the campaign with a big change to his usual class of choice, by playing Rian Dovaire, a priest to the goddess Elinar.
I have to say, I am pretty happy with things thus far (The Iron King especially).
As for Trevor and Mel’s new characters? They’ll arrive soon.

But but but, he’s a dwarf, and his name is Swiftbeard. Where’s the beard?

I bet the Iron King knows the story. Can’t tell if Sam does, though.

Maybe his beard was so fast that it got away before he could grow it or something. I don’t know.

I think he slept in….shaved it in afternoon.

That poor, poor Dwarf.

Makes more sense than a bearded elf.

I remember AD&D elves being depicted with finely groomed moustaches and/or chin beards on some pictures (official ones that is).

Sooo stealing that opening line.

I love the fact that there’s a priest that, due to religious beliefs and what not can be easily mistaken for another class. I think I love this a little more due to the fact that I’m playing a cleric in dndNext who, too, acts and looks more like a bard then your average cleric.

I’ve played clerics that were mistaken for druids, paladins, a barbarian once, and a necromancer (wizard). all due to gear, feats, and playstyle. Clerics can be very fun or a pain in the ass to play. getting the right blend of stats can be hard to make a cleric truly fun to play

We used to get a lot of thief-priests with Luck and Trickery domains back in 3.x.

Dwarves like big beards and they cannot lie!
Hah its not about beards and titties! I guess Thorin and company helped show that.
And theres a backstory to his beardlessness? Did it get in the way of him quickly picking a lock n get stuck in a door? Who knows. Maybe its a spectral vorpal beard that only appears once a day…

Wow, even Dwarven women have beards. So Brett’s character is even LESS masculine than a female of his species?

Now now, dwarven women haven’t had beards since 2nd edition. Thank Moradin.

I have yet to see Mel in the room for this game. She is going to be part of this campaign right?

Indeed she is. She’s playing a big role as well so I held her back a little for the build up.

HAHA! Not *that* big.
The Iron King looks to be a great character.
And if he is what I think he is then it should definitely should cut down on most of the more common attempts at regicide in the kingdom.

Indeed it does.
He is an iron golem, fashioned into the likeness of the first ruler of Ansalare. The king fell ill with a wasting disease and with no living heirs, the court Archmages fashioned the golem and transferred his soul into it. Years later, he adopted the moniker of The Iron King (a name used by most of his subjects anyway). He has ruled fairly and unerringly for generations.

Just what I thought.. An excellent idea for a character that will act as a central point for the campaign.
I would also imagine that the royal bounty placed on Rust Monsters must be astronomical there.

Leo, you win. As a person who usually plays a mage, I always loved when the macho fighters ran screaming at the sight of one.

No shit.
MURDER. ON. SIGHT.
I’m definitely going to miss Dagger McStab III esquire and his sassy comments, but Brett’s new character looks like Varric from DA2, which is a good start…

I spotted that, too. I recall several comments about Varric lack of beard as well

You know… it seems to me that maybe Swiftbeard may be a throwback to Brett himself… who happens to grow a beard on certain, snowy occasions… perhaps maybe I am close? Maybe? MAYBE?! GOD DAMNIT BRIAN TELL ME I AM CORRECT!

one thing i remember from some dwarven “lore” in many D&D settings was that dwarves who were exiled from their clan were shaved before getting the boot
